Talkify / AI Receptionist / Virtual Receptionist NZ
Answering NZ business calls 24/7 · Built in Christchurch

A virtual receptionist that never puts you on hold.

Talkify answers your business phone in a real New Zealand voice, at any hour, on the first ring. It knows your services, your prices and your availability. It books the job into your calendar while the caller is still on the line, then texts you what happened. One flat price, whether you take ten calls this month or three hundred.

From $129/month founding rate · 100 minutes included · No setup fee · No lock-in

What your virtual receptionist actually does.

Not a switchboard and not a message service. It handles the call end to end, the way a good receptionist who knows your business would.

Answers in your business name.

Your greeting, your tone, your vocabulary, in a genuine NZ or Australian voice, from 0.4 seconds. Thirty-two voices to choose from, plus te reo Māori greetings and correct pronunciation of local place names.

Answers real questions.

Opening hours, what you charge, whether you cover their suburb, how long a job takes, whether you can fit them in this week. It is trained on your business, so it answers rather than promising someone will call back.

Books into your live calendar.

It checks real availability and books the appointment on the call, then sends the confirmation. Connects to Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, HubSpot, GoHighLevel, Xero, Zenoti, GymMaster and MechanicDesk, with other systems available on a custom setup.

Takes a proper message when it should.

Name, number, what they want, how urgent, when to ring back. Not a scribbled note: a structured summary plus the full transcript and recording, in your inbox and on your phone.

Escalates the ones that matter.

You set the rules. Genuine emergencies, named callers, the jobs worth interrupting you for: it warm-transfers them to a person with the context already gathered.

Answers everyone at once.

There is no queue and no hold music. Five people ringing at nine in the morning all get answered on the first ring, which is the moment most businesses quietly lose work.

Live on your number the same day.

You keep your number. Nothing gets ported, nothing gets installed.

01

Tell it about your business

Your services, prices, hours, service area, the questions you are sick of answering, and what should always come straight to you. We load it; you read it back and change anything that does not sound like you.

02

Point your phone at it

Set a call diversion on your existing number, either always, or only when you are busy or do not pick up within a few rings. That is a few minutes with your phone provider, and it is reversible at any time.

03

Read what it caught

Every call arrives as an SMS summary and sits in your dashboard with the transcript and recording. Change any wording and it goes live in seconds.

Human virtual receptionist vs AI, side by side.

Both answer your phone in your business name. What happens next, and what it costs, is where they part ways.

Human service pricing reflects published NZ virtual receptionist and answering service rates: low monthly retainers with per-call or per-minute billing on top. Several providers label plans "pay per call" without publishing the rate, so always price your own real call volume before signing. Ours is on the pricing page with no asterisks.

When a human service is genuinely better.

An honest comparison cuts both ways. There are calls where a human still wins.

Emotionally heavy calls.

If your phone carries a high share of distressed or sensitive callers, a skilled human's judgement and warmth is worth the premium. Many Talkify customers handle this with escalation rules instead: the AI answers, recognises the situation, and warm-transfers to a human immediately.

Complex negotiation on the call.

If most calls involve live negotiation or judgement calls only a senior person can make, no receptionist of any kind should be finishing those calls. The job is triage, and AI triages well, but be realistic about what you are buying.

You want a single named person.

Some firms want callers to build a relationship with one familiar receptionist. A boutique human service offers that in a way software honestly does not, at a price that reflects it.

The maths most businesses actually face.

For bookings, quotes, opening hours, availability and messages, which is most of what rings, the comparison is not close.

A message is a lead you still have to chase.

The traditional service hands you a name and number at the end of the day. You ring back at 6pm, they have already booked the next business on Google. Talkify books the appointment while the caller is still warm, on the first call, and texts them confirmation. That difference, message versus outcome, is the whole game.

Per-call pricing punishes your best weeks.

A human service bills you most in exactly the weeks your marketing works. A flat $129/month with 10c overage means a spike in enquiries is pure upside. Work out what your real volume costs on the missed call calculator.

Most of them stop at answering the phone.

A virtual receptionist that only answers inbound calls solves half the problem. The other half is the calls your business needs to make: the reminders, the win-backs, the overdue invoices nobody has time to chase. Here is what each provider publishes.

Frequently asked.

Nine of the questions we hear most. If yours isn't here, ring our live demo agent on 03 242 1183, it'll either answer or queue a callback from a human.

What is a virtual receptionist?
A virtual receptionist is a phone answering arrangement where someone outside your business answers your calls in your business name. Traditionally that someone is a human in a call centre answering for dozens of businesses at once, billed per call or per minute on top of a monthly retainer. Increasingly it is an AI receptionist: software that answers in a natural voice, at any hour, for a flat monthly price.
How quickly can I get a virtual receptionist answering my phone?
Same day. You keep your existing number and point your call diversion at your Talkify agent, which takes a few minutes with your phone provider. We load your services, hours, prices and escalation rules, you listen to it and adjust the wording, and it starts answering. There is no hardware, no number porting and no setup fee.
Is a virtual receptionist a real person?
With traditional NZ services, yes: a real person in a call centre, usually during business hours, reading from your script between calls for other clients. With an AI virtual receptionist like Talkify, the voice is generated but the conversation is real: it answers questions about your business, books appointments and takes messages, and most callers do not pick that it is AI. Ring 03 242 1183 and judge for yourself.
How much does a virtual receptionist cost in NZ?
Human services advertise low entry prices, often $19 to $50 a month, but bill per call or per minute on top. At a realistic 60 to 80 calls a month most NZ businesses land between $200 and $500, and a busy month costs more. After-hours cover is usually extra. Talkify is $129/month at the founding rate for your first 3 months, then $199, with 100 minutes included and overage from 10c a minute, 24/7 included, no setup fee.
Does it only answer after hours?
No, and in practice that is not where most of the value shows up. In the call reports our customers have shared with us, the majority of answered calls arrive during ordinary business hours, because the phone rings while the person who would answer it is already on another call or in front of a customer. One electrical contractor takes their heaviest volume at nine in the morning. Your agent covers both: the overflow during the day and the calls that used to hit voicemail at night.
What does a human virtual receptionist do that AI cannot?
Genuine human judgement on messy, emotionally loaded calls is still a human strength: a distressed caller, a sensitive complaint, a negotiation. If your calls are mostly that, a quality human service is worth the premium. Most business calls are not that. They are bookings, opening hours, prices, availability and messages, which an AI handles instantly, simultaneously and identically well at 2pm or 2am, and hands the hard ones to you with context.
What does an AI receptionist do that a human service cannot?
Answer every call at once with zero hold time, around the clock, including public holidays, without per-call billing. Talkify also finishes the work on the call: it reads your live calendar and books the appointment, rather than taking a message for you to ring back. A message is a lead you still have to chase. A booking is revenue.
Can I switch from my answering service to Talkify without changing numbers?
Yes. Talkify works by call forwarding from your existing number, the same way your current service does. Point your diversion at your Talkify agent and you are live the same day. There is no porting, no hardware and no lock-in, so you can run it alongside your current service and compare for a week.
Will it sound like my business?
You choose the voice (32 of them, including real NZ and Australian voices and te reo Māori greetings), the greeting, the tone and the vocabulary. It introduces itself with your business name, follows your escalation rules, and never has an off day. You can update any wording from the dashboard and it goes live in seconds.
Where do my call recordings and transcripts live?
Audio, transcripts and call metadata are stored in New Zealand data centres and encrypted at rest with AES-256. Those recordings contain your customers' personal information, which the Privacy Act makes you responsible for, so it is worth asking any provider the same question and getting the answer in writing.
